STATEMENT IN SUPPORT OF THE COMMEMORATION OF THE SIGNING OF THE COMPREHENSIVE AGREEMENT ON THE BANGSAMORO LAST MARCH 27, 2014

The Bangsamoro Human Rights Commission joins the entire Region in commemorating the signing of the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro last March 27, 2014. This day has been declared a special non-working holiday according to Proclamation No. 0001, Series of 2023, by the Chief Minister of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM).

The Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro (CAB) was the consolidation of numerous accords and agreements between the Government of the Philippines (GPH) and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) in the past years of negotiations and has been instrumental in promoting peace and stability in Mindanao. The CAB has paved the way for establishing the BARMM through Republic Act No. 11054, otherwise known as the “Organic Law for the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao,” and has served as its basis.

The signing of this Agreement was a historic event for the Bangsamoro people, as it signaled the end of decades of conflict and facilitated a new era of development and progress for the Region.

Moreover, this Agreement recognized the right of the Bangsamoro people to self-determination and has served as a bridge toward the establishment of a new autonomous government that is more responsive to the needs and aspirations of the Bangsamoro people.

As we commemorate this important event, it is essential to recognize the critical role that human rights played in making this Agreement possible. The Bangsamoro people have long struggled for their fundamental human rights, including their right to self-determination. This Agreement represents a significant step forward in realizing these rights.

Hence, the Bangsamoro Human Rights Commission expresses its full support for commemorating the signing of the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro and emphasizes the importance of human rights in this process. We continue to call on all parties to continue to respect the human rights of the Bangsamoro people and work together to ensure that the promises of this Agreement are fully realized, In Shaa Allah.
