BHRC CONDUCTS FACILITY MONITORING AND LEGAL ASSISTANCE AT BJMP, DAVAO CITY

Davao City, May 25, 2023 – As part of the weeklong activity entitled: “Human Rights Education, Detention Facility Monitoring, and Legal Mission Outside BARMM,” the Bangsamoro Human Rights Commission (BHRC) conducted facility monitoring and provided legal assistance at the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in Davao City, with approximately four hundred (400) persons deprived of liberty (PDLs).

In collaboration with the National Commission on Muslim Filipinos (NCMF) Region XI and BJMP Davao City, the BHRC’s Protection Division carried out a comprehensive facility monitoring and compliance assessment to ensure that the human rights of the Bangsamoro PDLs were respected and protected within the detention facility.

The assessment aimed to evaluate the conditions, treatment, and overall well-being of the inmates, especially the Bangsamoro PDLs, ensuring that the facility complied with the required international standards for the humane treatment of prisoners.

Subsequently, the BHRC’s team provided legal assistance to the PDLs. This included individual consultations to address their legal concerns, offer guidance on legal processes, and advocate for their rights within the justice system. Said assistance is aimed at empowering the PDLs, ensuring that they receive fair and just treatment while in detention.
