Banay-Banay, Davao Oriental, May 22, 2023 – The Bangsamoro Human Rights Commission (BHRC) organized a weeklong activity entitled: “Human Rights Education, Detention Facility Monitoring, and Legal Mission Outside BARMM.”
The first day of the event took place in Banay-Banay, Davao Oriental, with approximately one hundred (100) participants from the Kagan communities benefiting from the human rights education and legal assistance provided by the BHRC.
The activity commenced with an introduction to the BHRC’s mandates and functions. Atty. Alladin S. Tamama, CPA, MPA, Head of the Promotion Division, discussed basic human rights concepts, including abuse and violation, to enhance awareness among attendees. This was followed by a workshop that was conducted to identify human rights issues specific to the Bangsamoro in Banay-Banay, ensuring that their concerns were reported to the BARMM Government for appropriate action.

In line with the protection of human rights, the BHRC’s Protection Division, led by Special Investigator IV Jawwada P. Macatangcop, Acting Head, facilitated the provision of legal assistance to the participants. Through this, the community members received guidance on legal matters, equipping them with the necessary knowledge to protect their rights and seek appropriate remedies.
During the event, BHRC Chairperson Atty. Abdul Rashid P. Kalim held a meeting with leaders from the Kagan community, emphasizing the Commission’s commitment to reaching out beyond BARMM. Chairperson Atty. Kalim reiterated the BHRC’s dedication to inclusivity and ensuring that no Bangsamoro community is left behind in the pursuit of human rights.
